I've heard conflicting info about the colored circle thing, I've heard it should be as small as possible, and I've heard the opposite, that it should be as big as possible.
In my experience, I've seen no correlation with circle size and throw quality. The main factor seems to be where you hit the pokemon (sweet spot seems to be the center of the circle), and if you throw a curveball.
My theory is that the goal is to get the pokeball to land inside the colored ring. The smaller the ring the better if you get it inside, but it's also more difficult to get it inside of a small ring. So you can choose how difficult you want the throw to be. If I'm correct, then really hard to catch pokemon should be caught with risking the small circle, easier pokemon with a large circle.
