I find it hilarious when people after the result of the game make assertions of teams wanting/allowing the opposing team to win...
If Pop would have won without Duncan and Diaw tonight everyone would be saying how doomed the Warriors are and unstoppable the Spurs are/will be...
But because it went against their wishes and the Warrior dynastic narrative continues on there must be an explanation other than Pop doing his usually of giving his players rest and the Warriors doing their usual proving they are one of the best and historic teams of all time..
or maybe Popp understands that the warriors are a very good team and any possibility of making things tougher for them should be taken
the outcome of this game was meaningless for the spurs. Playing the game was not meaningless, I'm sure he tested out some rotations/learned from the game...but the end result was absolutely meaningless. The spurs are locked into the #2 seed and a W wouldn't really have done anything. Sure, they would've had the undefeated home record...but does that really mean anything? The spurs are as good as the spurs are. This game had no impact on their talent level. This game had no impact on how they will eventually do in the playoffs. Using the "added-pressure" logic that we are with the warriors and their record-breaking win total, if the Spurs won and maintained the unbeaten home record...maybe they would've felt some pressure if they lost their first home game in the playoffs. maybe popp wanted to get it out of the way here.
The warriors NOT breaking the record would've allowed them to re-shift their focus on the #1 priority of winning a chip....but dudes were celebrating as if they already won it after tonight's W. They already accomplished one of their most important goals of the season....and they stumbled their way there. Meanwhile, teams like the Spurs are resting up and preparing for their first long duration battle of the year that is the playoffs. Whereas the warriors have essentially been playing playoff games post-ASG. Will they be fit mentally to endure another stretch of 4 weeks of intense basketball to win the championship? OR will they be too tired from all of this record-breaking nonsense
The thing with the '95 bulls is that they weren't trying to break any records....they were just playing basketball and broke the record naturally. They weren't getting burnt out in trying to beat any records.
Steph Curry himself said in the post-game interview after the grizz game that he "hopes breaking the record will rejuvinate this team so they can start playing better basketball again"
