When you go to pursue your masters in English, there are usually programs that allow you to assist professors and/or teach lower-level English classes as a way to help pay for tuition while also gaining work experience. You really need at least a masters to teach English, since any schmuck can get a bachelors of arts. Most professors at respectable schools have a doctorate degree.
However, if you're looking into teaching English for middle/high school, that's a different story. You will need some background in education.
