I used to play ball in a small rec league, I was basically one of the only Asian player on most of the games since I lived in a demographically black area.
I distinctly remember my opponents calling me, chink, Bruce Lee's grandson, sweatshop, widescreen eyes, and the list goes on...
My teammates had my back, and I had theirs.
In the heat of the moment, sometimes we say shit we don't mean. I've even told my teammates not to call some of the rich kids we used to play against, 'bitch ass white boys,' because I didn't want them stooping to their level. You take the insults with a grain of salt, and move on.
That being said, there is a double standard, I agree. If you want equality, then you must embrace it while refusing to partake in the same negativity that others are expressing.
T-Rez definitely looks like the dude who just loves to talk shit and get in your face. And Luka didn't even flinch. What a G.
JJ Reddick and Kevin Love had a great podcast about it, they mentioned how that was the insult called many times to them, but they just let it go and played ball.
Not defending Harrell, but context/conoattations always matters. Harrell probably didn't mean to insult Doncic with the intent to be racist, but I'd imagine the repercussions for Luka would've been severe had the roles been reversed.
And unfortunately that is a problem we're currently facing as of now.
I lol’d a bit
