Statistically he had one of the top 5 defensive seasons in nba history. Casuals just look at 1 series and think the know more than the people doing this for a living.

yeah i was slowly going to that point. not a lot of people watch Gobert play, they see all these news and comments about how ass Gobert was a few games, and then start bashing him for winning the dpoy

That's always the case with him until playoffs come around and he gets exposed.

Same with Simmons. Can look good in the regular season, even the first round, but once you get further it's bye bye

You can go ahead and post all of those stats but they are irrelevant once you're playing a series against good competition.
Even less now that the regular season in the NBA has become meaningless over recent years with how much players rest and how obvious it is that MANY of these players are on cruise control for most games.

Clippers put Morris and Batum at the 5 with Bev/Jackson/Mann in and that was the end of Gobert......
It's not that hard to take a rim protector away from the paint in today's NBA with the freedom of movement and EVERY player being required to shoot.
He can easily go ahead and guard Morris+Batum playing trees on offense but then the Clippers would literally walk into the paint.

The real problem isn't his defense because overall they could have done a better job than allowing an open jump shooter every time rather than forcing them to attack the basket simply because Gobert wouldn't have been there.
I get the coaches philosophy but constantly giving up open 3s in today's NBA over the chance of a possible contested layup is just stupid.
Problem is 7-footers today can't score a baby hook over any player that's like 6'6....so the Clippers found a way to expose him on defense making his impact on the court minimal since his best attribute on offense is screening.

They tried same thing with suns last night, and he feasted on pnr cuz no batum or morris can guard him. They had to adjust yetagain and put zubac and cousins in. Its not because it worked with gobert, that it will work with every rim protector.

It'll work against ANY rim protector that provides nothing on offense
Unless you have a roster like the Warriors or Nets ofc

every year teams just get a random center like Batum to go small in the playoffs and shoot a bunch of 3's and then the Jazz have no answer.
