Not selling for pennies on the dollar seems like a pretty wise decision to me.
Let’s look at two recent trades where multiple picks were provided just to show how out of his mind Morey is. And I’m going to focus on what the teams trading the All-Stars received because it’s important.
Bucks-Pelicans.
Pelicans receive Eric Bledsoe, 2 first round picks and 2 pick swaps for Jrue Holiday.
Nets-Rockets.
Rockets receive Lavert, 3 first round picks, 4 picks swaps for James Harden who was actively sabotaging the team.
CJ McCollum is far better than Eric Bledsoe or Caris Lavert. He’s been just under 25/4/4 with consistent efficiency and fits the team perfectly. Let’s add to the fact that Ben Simmons current value to the Sixers is zero and this shows how deluded Morey is. His asking price is what a team would give up for a superstar without including a borderline All-Star like McCollum. Even before Simmons asked for a trade and held out there’s no way he was worth that type of package. And the clock is ticking…… he assumes Portland or Washington is going to get off to a slow start but he’s not even considering that the Sixers could really start off poorly as well.
You assume that the 76ers will just glide through the regular season without Simmons? The East is better and deeper than it has been. Also factor in what teams are trying to negotiate with Philly. Indiana, Sacramento, Cleveland, Toronto, Washington, Portland, Minnesota. None of these teams fit the criteria of 1) being desperate to win now and 2) having a piece that is above the value of a CJ McCollum or Malcolm Brogdon that they would be willing to give up for Simmons. Towns = no. Beal = no. Lillard = no. Even Masai turned down the Siakam trade, and Siakam is marginally better than Brogdon or McCollum while also being a poor fit on the team.
