In the NBA they refs play very loose in counting the gather step (hand specifically on the side of the ball, not the top, or the bottom) as a step towards a travel.

So smart bball players use the gather step that counts as the end of their dribble cycle and thus gain an extra step.

I went in incredible detail about this in a post a few years ago because People always thought Giannis was travelling but he doesn't travel because the first step counts as a gather step aka the end of his dribble cycle so he can then take 2 more steps and not get called for a travel
