Well yeah, definitely said that just like everyone else. No front office in the NBA was going to pass up a 22 year old Ben Simmons in his second season as an All-Star for a 30 year old Jimmy Butler who is known as a team cancer himself (ironic, right?). That would have been a bit extreme to bail on your #1 pick in his successful second season....hindsight is 20-20. Everyone can be a Monday morning quarterback now.

That's what cracks me up when people call into the radio stations here and say "I told you so we should have traded him years ago!" lmao yeah, except that's not realistic and nobody could justify that then. Everyone expected Simmons to progress and get better like any other potential superstar player (which to his credit he has defensively). While he's still a good player, All-Star and even has All-NBA on his resume, he clearly had no intention of taking that next step to top 10 while in Philly.

Forget Butler though, if we're talking about "what if" then i'm a bit upset we didn't get Harden for Simmons while we still could. :wallbash:

Butler has been sensational for Miami, he is the main reason they got to the Finals in the bubble. Philly 100% beats Boston with Butler and they definitely beat Atlanta. Hell I’m pretty sure if you swap Simmons for Butler this year, Philly has a great shot at beating Milwaukee for the Championship

You do realize we can play this "what if" game for every team, every situation, in every sport....right?

The same could be said if they traded for Harden during the season. No brainer they'd knock Atlanta off. i mean let's be honest, anyone that shot the fucking ball once in the 4th quarter would have been a better option LOL

Didn’t Brand invest assets to get Butler and then he left for nothing? That lends even more to the argument that they should have flipped Simmons because whatever trade package they got would’ve included Butler

Butler and Justin Patton were traded to Philadelphia in exchange for Robert Covington, Dario Saric, Jerryd Bayless and a 2022 second-round draft pick.

Butler was then traded by the Sixers in a sign and trade with Miami, which allowed them to trade him for Josh Richardson from Miami.

Then Morey joins the Sixers, and one of his first moves was to trade Richardson and a second-round draft pick to Dallas for Seth Curry.

So no, didn't lose him for nothing. Ended up with Seth Curry which turned out to be a pretty nice return considering Butler was planning to leave in FA for nothing.

One of the leagues top 10 players turned into Seth Curry, aside from that Simmons would’ve gotten a haul at that time. Morey is delusional to think a team will give up the same haul today. You think Simmons sitting out somehow helps his trade value? Don’t be ridiculous, teams are watching this thinking they don’t want to be stuck holding the bag. The only teams who could consider Simmons being happy are the ones on his wish list. Golden State already said no thanks. That leaves Lakers (no assets), Kings (best trade partner involving maybe Haliburton, Buddy, or Fox), and the Clippers (no assets)

Sixers ultimately traded Roco, Saric, Jerryd Bayless and a 2nd round pick for 1 year of Butler, 1 year of Richardson, and multiple years of Curry on a super team friendly contract. Seems like a fucking win to me....

Yes, i'd say it turned out well. Obviously keeping Butler would have been the ideal scenario, but he was leaving so getting anything (let alone one of the best 3pt shooters in the league) for him was a nice return.

Curry balled out, was top 5 in 3pt% this season (no surprise considering he's #2 all-time in NBA 3pt %) and in the playoffs he went wild averaging 21 PPG on crazy efficiency: 62% FG and 60% 3PT in the second round against the Hawks.

Better to walk away with a starter that can do that then nothing at all.

Except Butler is still a top 20 player and Simmons could have legitimately landed a Luka or Dame at that time. Now they'd be lucky to get Kyrie's crazy ass to play half the games unvaccinated

Well yeah, but again that's being a Monday morning QB lol. Obviously we're all in agreement this situation now is not idea and if we had a time machine trading him in advance would be ideal...

He's still on the team, he's still under contract for many years, he's still only 25, and at some point they'll move him for more than what they can now. His value will be higher during the season when teams are desperate, that's ALWAYS the case in the NBA, mid-season trades is where teams start getting crazy with moves.

it's not being a Monday morning QB considering I said this in 2019 when the Butler fiasco happened. Butler had a bad reputation because he was with two shitty FO's and expected his teammates to care more than they did. Was Butler wrong? Minnesota and Chicago haven't touched the playoffs since he left, and Towns is just as soft as ever

oh and Butler is 3/3 because Simmons is as soft as baby shit just like he said... that Philly babied his ass too much
