I wonder if the code is very similar between games? Could probably just use current bot scripts on it once the bot clients do a small update to work for the new Diablo client

I'm sure the code is relatively similar enough for the bot scripts to be modified with mid/low difficulty. the question really is if the development team will enforce their Warden on hackers

my theory is that the development team has backdoor agreements with d2 item shops to allow them to dupe/mass bot and take a cut of the profits

That’s a pretty common theory and for d2LoD I think you’re right. Hopefully for d2r they find other avenues to make revenue and cut dupes and bottling.
