I mean the crisis happened in the middle of her Olympic run, not like she came with issues intent to steal the spotlight from her teammates. The news reported on it because she had the highest expectations coming into the Olympics and things didn’t go as expected, it’s more of a human interest piece. Then the media realized it was lucrative to write more articles about it because people kept reading them and arguing about it. Simone herself has been very vocally supportive of her teammates throughout the games
i'd agree with you from the media stance, it's great clickbait, but simone herself is definitely walking a fine line of attention grab vs support for her team
when they won the silver in the team event she shouldn't have gone up on stage for the post event press conference. every single question was asked about her and her mental health rather than any of the others who actually won the medal
the takeaway for gymnastics this year isn't the silvers or golds they won, it's how brave simone is for doing what she did
i just wish the narrative was "simone you've been great, and you did well to earn bronze, please get well and do what you need to do; now let's talk about these other 5 girls and their accomplishments"
