This is pretty much the outlook some of my buddies have, who are not fans of Simmons at all (and haven't been).
They said if the Sixers made a run and made it to the Finals or something and lost they'd probably keep Simmons and just keep covering up the issues instead of addressing them. Now with the issues being so glaring and worse than ever this series they can't be ignored, so it's almost certain that Simmons is playing for another team next season.
It's mental for Simmons though, he's just not there. Idk if it's something in his personal life or what but he's just lost. He has never been a great free throw shooter (always over 60% though) but to have the worst % in NBA history in the playoffs like he did this season was just insane. And to be as passive and uninterested in scoring as he did the last few games just can't be explained otherwise...
With Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid on the court together in the regular season, the Sixers outscored opponents by 16 points per 100 possessions played (98th percentile). In the playoffs? They were +19.2 per 100 possessions (99th percentile). This speaks more on Embiid though.
its party the sixers fault tho.
They should have made an effort in the player development department to enable Simmons to develop the ability to shoot.
Look at giannis. Simmons and Giannis overall are similar players. Extremely athetlic, big and strong (obviously Giannis is slightly bigger and stronger), but needed to develop "basketball skills", rather than just have a "basketball body". Giannis, while he still needs to work on his basketball skills, at least has shown meanginful improvement overtime. Obviously he has to invest and buy into the fact that he needs to do it, but it is also on the organization to enable it to happen, and give him the tools and support around him to enable it.
The sixers just let simmons be simmons. And never pushed him to get better. Part of the blame is on Simmons, part of the blame is on the sixers.
I personally was never high on simmons tho. Especially in todays NBA, simply being bigger stronger and faster than everyone is no longer a recipe for success.
