If he files for retirement with the league he can void his contract and return as a free agent in 1 year. He loses one year of good pay that he might not be on again though.

That would never happen because he still has 4 years remaining on a 5 year / $177M contract. He'd lose all of that, not to mention he would have to sit out an entire year AND he'd he would further tarnish his image and teams really wouldn't want to deal with him then (or give him another big contract).

Nobody in his position (sitting early on his first big NBA contract) would do such a thing. That's crazy talk.
