the point with paying folks more is to get people worthwhile in seat, not just pay out those with tenure
hire less, but pay them more, make them folks who went to college, or have some form of individual intelligence
not just a bunch of guys who were pushed around in high school looking for revenge
He's a smart dude who got his bachelor's degree in law before going through training, so he's definitely qualified. However, for what he says does, 6-figures seems like overpay.
Other state troopers have it even easier... like my former neighbor is stationed at a weigh station to check commercial vehicles. It's not dangerous, and you really don't need any education to do it, just training for what to look for. Having a state trooper do such a basic task is overpay.
I agree that there should be higher standards for law enforcement though. It's a very low bar to work in law enforcement at the local level. There's room for improvement all across the board: hiring standards, training, oversight, documenting filed complaints, body cameras, legal accountability/punishment for poor policing... the list goes on. Even the purpose of law enforcement needs to be questioned: should the government be doing more social intervention to avoid crime altogether? Should it be the police's responsibility to do this or should another agency take up this responsibility?
