It's not free for me, that's for sure. All the ingredients to make a 5 pound batch that turns into about half that is around $25-35 depending on what cuts of meat I get or if its venison. Plus I have to go collect the wood for the smoker depending on what type of jerky needs different kinds of wood to be smoked with for that perfect flavor. And then you have to baby sit the smoker to make sure the the fire stays going and the smoking wood in it doesn't get dry and ignite. That's why I don't make it that often because it's a pain in the ass. I just had a craving for some and SAF wanted to try it for awhile since I bragged it up so he happpened to be the lucky one this time. Maybe I'll make a jerky free roll if SAF approves.
