As a Bucks fan very familiar with Tobias, I was pissed initially that they traded him for a rental of JJ Reddick at the time. However, if that saved them from giving Tobias his bloated contract then I'm pretty satisfied with it. Tobias is not close to All-Star caliber and his contract says he is an All-Star player.
I mean Tobias has been in the All-Star convorsation a few times in his career. Never a clear cut selection, but certainly close. He was among the "snubs" list two years ago (2020-21) averaging 21/8/4 on 52/42/90 efficiency and didn't make it. Particularly because they already had Embiid and Simmons selected, and there was no way the Sixers were going to have a third when teams above them in the standings only had 1 or 2 as well. Middleton has made it numerous times while averaging similar or worse numbers than that lol.
His first three seasons in Philly, Tobias averaged 20/7/3 on 49/39/86 efficiency. It wasn't until the past two seasons with the arrival of Harden and the emergence of Maxey that Tobias really had to take a step back and became the clear cut 4th option on this team. He had less opportunities this past season (just 11.4 FGA per game), but he was still really efficient and posted the best TS% since he has been in Philly (60.2%). Shot 50% from the field, 39% from 3pt, and 88% from the line. He adapted to his role pretty well and if it wasn't for that bloated salary he'd be appreciated far more than he is.

In all seriousness Tobias is better than people give him credit for. He’s good, not great. The issue always has been he’s on a contract that pays him much more than he should make, especially for his current role being the 4th option. When they signed him they couldn’t have accounted for the emergence of Maxey. He barely misses regular season games, can score in a variety of ways, improved defensively over the years. You really just shouldn’t be a 4th option on offense making that much money. With the amount of money he makes and the role he plays now its just made fans hate him more
And now he finally has some value since he’s an expiring contract with the new CBA rules about to be in place, so I get why the Sixers don’t want to just give him away for nothing, still have to be realistic though like that Cavs trade was ridiculous
Well said. He's a good locker room guy, and a pretty good player overall, he's just not worthy of that contract. Only way they move him is if it clearly improves the team this season, and with it being an expiring deal it has a lot more value.
