It must hurt to be an okc fan

We haven’t won a championship, but the Thunder have been in the mix for almost their entire tenure in OKC. It’s been a wild ride to have so many big names play in my hometown. It’s not painful, most Thunder fans in Oklahoma are just excited to have an NBA team in general lol

It was pretty well public consensus at the time to pay ibaka over harden too

So it wasn’t just the thunder that got it wrong

This. People knew harden was good but no one knew he would become the MVP caliber player he is today. At the time, spending money on a defensive anchor was the ‘smart’ move to keep a well balanced team. Plus, Harden played poorly in the finals and took a year or two in Houston before he broke out. To put it in perspective , we replaced him with Kevin Martin who was just as productive off the bench.

The bigger mistake was having so much money tied up in Perkins... but the NBA was still dominated by bigs.

It’s easy to look back now and clown presti for the trade (Obviously, it would have been better to keep Harden lol). It seemed like the right move at the time, just didn’t work out 🤷‍♂️

He was an all star averaging 26/5/6 his first season in Houston

But yes the decision was understandable at the time. People foresaw Harden’s abilities but you already had two premier scorers in Westbrook and Durant and Harden was a defensive liability. Ibaka was the sensible choice at the time.

You are right. Harden was good from the beginning in Houston, I just mean it took a couple years before he elevated to MVP Harden

More like it took Mike D'Antoni putting the ball in his hands 100% of the time.

Someone remind me, my mind is failing me. Thunder had the perfect squad with Westbrook - Harden - Durant - Ibaka - Perkins. I recall Harden playing 6th man but i cant for the life of me remember who started over him.

Help?

Now I'm remembering. Was it actually Sefolosha? My god...

He was still developing at that point. He was highly productive off the bench (won 6 man of the year) and having 3x elite scorers starting maybe wasn't setting up wins necessarily in the eyes of the coaches. Also, sefolosha not only knew how to play defense and cared about defense, he was an great defender. 3x players putting up 30+ points a game does not translate into wins. come on aspen
