I'm guessing it's a marketing ploy, but people vastly underestimate women when it comes to basketball ability. I believe that some women could have handled playing in the NBA. Cheryl Miller is widely thought to have had the ability to play in the NBA. Just consider:
Tamika Catchings @3?
Cynthia Cooper @ guard?
Lisa Leslie @ FWD?
Sheryl Swoopes @ guard?
Maybe Natalie Williams?
I've seen university varsity women play competently against university varsity men in Canada, and before anyone says it's just Canada, consider that women's basketball is better in the US than it is in Canada. I think the 1st female player to make the NBA will be a guard, but I don't see why a woman couldn't play other positions; it's just that size, strength and speed in female athletes is generally lower than that of women.
Going by statistics, elite female athletes perform at about the same level as average men's athletes in physical tests (i.e. the combine level) across the board in high school, university and the professional level. That information comes from data taken from
NBA strength coaches. Besides, are we really doing to deny that a WNBA player can't drive past Luke Ridnour?

Lacks Diana Taurasigod.
