Roster as of right now
Thomas, Smart
Bradley, Brown
Hayward/Jae/Tatum
???
Horford/Zizic
We have Guerschon Yabusele as a big for the rotation, but doesn't seem like we'll be bringing him over this season.
Zeller was waived this week.
Seems like the next move would be moving Avery Bradley for some type of presence in the paint (hopefully)
I believe Bradley moves. He's a FA next year -- and I don't see us committing to him if we're going to keep Brown/Tatum who need more playing time.
Moving Smart makes no sense to me because we have no other PG. He's also a RFA next year while Bradley is a UFA.
Jae is signed for 3 years at 7 million a year...that contract is an absolute steal. Would hate to lose him, but he is easily the most valuable of the 3. Especially because of the contract.
Celtics have to move money because we are slightly below the cap space needed to sign Hayward.
Warriors afford their core players because players their players were eligible for Bird rights. Bird rights allows teams to re-sign their own FAs if they have been with the team under contract for 3+years w/o getting traded. This can be 3x 1year contracts. Players traded also keep their bird rights I believe.
This also works with waived players, but it's a little different.
NBA also gives team options such as Bi-Annual exception and MLE -- different type of cap space to sign some players.
Their owner clearly cares about winning if he's willing to go way over the cap and pay the luxury -- which is great to see.
They just got really lucky with the contract their players are locked into while the salary cap went up back to back years. Making this super team once KD decided to go beta status.
Agh didn't know they waived zeller. Not a big deal anyway.
So wouldn't it make sense to keep Bradley another year and see what happens in free agency / wouldn't they have bird rights? Trade crowder for a center because like you said... they need one.
I think Bradley makes a lot more sense than smart for the Celtics at this point. I love both of them but Bradley can shoot and won't be needed to create with two guys who can both do that now. Smart also would probably net a larger return too.
I would love for the sixers to trade for Bradley though if they could get a new deal done. Holmes makes a lot of sense for the Celtics.
Edit: I also like the idea of committing to small ball. Running brown, crowder, Tatum and Hayward as the 3/4 full time. Sure you take a knock on rebounding but it would be an interesting match up in the playoffs.
