I dont believe that the Celtics are contenders personally but if they (or any other team) makes it to the Finals they would 100% have to be viewed afterwards as a contender for that season
Just like the 76ers were “title contenders” last year and the quadruple doink year, looking back they are rightfully viewed as failures to satisfy that criteria by non homers
Teams can get favorable matchups along the way and get smoked in the finals, though. That's all im saying. Which is what I'd expect to happen if they somehow lucked their way into the finals based on favorable eastern conference matchups
A teams odds to win their conference vs win a championship can be vastly different, so there is a difference in some capacity. But yes if they did make the finals, they'd be a flukey, lucky to be there, "contender"
