A big man in a perimeter oriented modern NBA wins the award, while he doesn't even guard the opposing teams best player every night. Meanwhile Ben Simmons can be assigned to ANYONE on any given night and take them out of the game, literally at any position. Shouldn’t perimeter defense be valued now more than ever before in NBA history, especially as players like Steph Curry, Lillard, Harden, KD, Trae Young, Booker, etc, etc, continue to lead the league in points scored from the backcourt position?
Oh well, we knew Gobert had it in the bag by the end of the season because it's so much easier for a big man to win it still for some reason, so as expected Simmons finished #2. Feels good seeing 25% of the players with DPOY votes be 76ers though. Simmons, Embiid, and Thybulle are 3 of the best defenders in the league for sure.
Yeah for some reason advanced metrics still skew heavily big because of dreb and blocks. Doesn’t feel like it would be that difficult to come up with metrics that weigh opponent 3s taken and opponent 3p% as well.
