They actually picked Simmons over butler which was an even worse decision.

Hindsight

Simmons was a #1 pick coming off his second season where was an All-Star already at 21 years old. Nobody in their right mind was going to take a 30+ year old with questionable character issues at that point over him.

A franchise drafted a guy #1 overall. A guy who was projected to be a superstar. He was an All-Star at 21 years old at this time and coming off a GREAT season with elite defense. Implying that they were going to move this franchise cornerstone and future of the league for Butler at the time is absolutely insane....


Again, hindsight is 20/20. No GM in the league would have said yeah lets move our 21 year old #1 pick All-Star with top 5 potential to keep Butler on the wrong side of 30. Sorry but that's just ridiculous lol
