Ratings can fuck off though. The core fanbase of the league is larger and more engaged than ever before. Look at the ballooning franchise values and consistent growth of league revenue. The leagues bigger and more popular than ever before globally. With that said, the NBA is actually seeing a large increase in viewership to last season.

Trying to compare ratings from like 1998 to now is a total waste of time. Things are MUCH different. Every episode of Seinfeld was more highly rated than the series finale of GOT if that tells you anything. Fewer options back in the day, and people only had broadcast TV. It's a different world now.

The NFL survives it because its on at the same time every week for the most part and it's just wildly popular in America. Football is king in Murica and it's not even close.

Nba is turning into the NFL, by design. pleb fans eagerly sitting and waiting to see how the refs are going to dictate the game. The easiest way to convince everyone this is okay is to do things such as create a 2 minute report, stop the play and go on the mic to announce to everyone what the calls are, heavily fine anyone that even looks sideways at the way the games are handled. Kerr put it very well, legistlating defense out of the game. I had to sit through 48 minutes of Demar Derozan double pump fake to draw a foul yesterday and its fucking sickening.

Ever since the removal of hand checking the game has been grossly manipulated to be a non contact sport. Basketball is now a non contact sport its quite fucking disgusting.

So because of the lack of freedom for defenders to you know, defend... Then ya points have skyrocketed.

Anyone arguing that the proliferation of the 3 ball is why there are more ppg is incorrect. It is the lack of hand checking, and the continued skew towards a non contact type of defense that is required now allows all these mans to do whatever they want. NBA has even in their defense tried to cut back when they added the no scissor kicking rule for offending parties. But all the time we still get calls because the shooter moves forward during a shot and the defender goes straight up and the refs always give the benefit of the doubt to the shooter in these cases. Take that Dame 3 ft that Brown was vehemently complaining about the other day (dude literally brought out a laptop to show the press how shit the call was, goodbye 50k) The defender did literally nothing out of bounds but because the game has skewed to hard that an easy 3 extra points out of nowhere assuming Dame hits those fts

I whole heartedly agree with you. People who actually enjoy the direction the NBA is going in are the same people that want their kid to get a 18th palce participation trophy. Sad deterioration of a great sport unfortunately.

You're overthinking it.

NBA is all about space and pace. A higher % of shots are now threes. The floor is spaced more than ever, players are more evolved than ever and capable of scoring in so many ways. Big men can't just camp the paint, defenses can't just pack the paint either. Defenses have to play honest to all of the shooters, opening up the lane.

More threes combined with more spacing and easier open games to attack = more scoring. NBA defenses are more evolved than ever, but it's BY FAR harder to play defense than ever before.
