trade was in place with Astros, but he didn't allow trade

The Tigers get-back for Verlander was believed to include, Franklin Perez, Daz Cameron and possibly Jake Rodgers. Again, deal is off.

Wow, you'd think he'd want to play for a contender, especially one with a bright future ahead.

Verlander to #Astros, source confirms to The Athletic. @anthonyfenech first. Perez, Cameron and Rodgers to #Tigers, per @JonHeyman.

Interesting. Fucker always owned the A's in the playoffs.

Will wait for Ryan's take on it.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/with-non-waiver-deadline-passed-heres-how-teams-can-still-make-trades-in-august/

Why did Verlander clear waivers? That article was written Aug 1, but he pitched well this month, raising his perceived value

Every AL contender has a worse record than Houston, why would none of those teams claim him and try to work out a trade? Did it simply come down to the fact that he would have vetoed a trade to any team other than Houston?

By taking on his salary, is Houston making a longterm sacrifice in exchange for the short term push in this years playoffs (and other contenders wouldn't have been willing take on a salary that will be viewed as overpay after this year)?
