Technically he's not retiring, just being declared medically disabled. That way he can still collect the money he's owed left in his contract (over $100M)

Tigers are still on the hook for like $6M per year, and then insurance covers a bunch of it. So the Rangers aren't exactly dishing out his entire contract themselves so it's really not that bad for them.

Well, besides the fact that they gave up Ian Kinsler for him and he's killing it out in Detroit.

$72 mill is left after this year. We will be compensated for half, so we will only pay $36 over the next 4 years since he is "retiring".
That's only from us, idk what Detroit still owes
