Jose Veras got Evan Longoria to struck out. Rays stranded runners on the corners.

Astros beat David Price and the Rays 2-1

Jose Veras got the save despite laboring and pitching out of a jam. An unearned run scored off an error.

Jarred Cosart's MLB debut: 8 shutout innings, two hits allowed, three walks, two strikeouts.

What I like about Cosart is he pitches to contact. He got a lot of groundball outs (12 groundouts), 4 fly outs and the rest were pop ups.
I can't wait for Cosart's second big league start after the all-star break

LOL, he just got a big gatorade bucket dumped on his head on the post-game interview.
His fastball was 94-to-96 MPH. He had all of his pitches working. He was working fast, wanted quick outs and less strikeouts.

I think we can kiss the first overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft goodbye. We may call up Mark Appel soon. Appel and Cosart will make it hard for us to go through a long losing streak. And five-tool center fielder George Springer (tearing it up at Triple-A now), along with power-hitting first baseman Jonathan Singleton, could be called up any day now as well.

Even though the Marlins are winning right now. We'll still have the first pick for now. I want lefty Carlos Rodon number one next June.

1. Astros 33-59
2. Marlins 34-57

I'm assuming a Marlins win, 8-3 late-inning lead (top 8) over the Nationals right now.
So a win tonight for the Astros didn't hurt us in that race.

The Phillies may regret trading these three players to the Astros for Hunter Pence: Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singleton and Domingo Santana.
Cosart and Singleton are going to have long and productive careers. Cosart is the first to hit the big leagues. Santana is only 20 years old, promising outfielder.
The Phillies traded Hunter Pence to the Giants and got much less in return. Gave up a dollar for him and got back 10 cents.

If we can just finish tanking the final few months to lock up the first overall pick. Draft Carlos Rodon number one next June.
We'll be set for the next 10-to-14 years with a starting rotation trio of Mark Appel, Carlos Rodon and Jarred Cosart.
That could be the next Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. Maybe not, but it will have that type of excitement for me.

I doubt that they rush Appel this year

I hope you are right. We're going to blow our chance at drafting Carlos Rodon out of NC State if we win too much.

In 17 games since being called up to Triple-A, Springer has hit .404/.507/.842 7 HR 17 RBI 5 SB. He's still striking out a ton though

Astros lost 4-3 after leading 3-0 and the Marlins beat the Nationals 2-1 in 10 innings.

Things couldn't have gone any better on Saturday!

The race for the 1st overall pick in 2014

1. Astros 33-60
2. Marlins 35-57
3. Brewers 37-55

It feels nice to have a three-game lead in the loss column again. One more game left before the all-star break on Sunday.
Erik Bedard is starting for us tomorrow so I expect another loss to reach 61, while the Marlins try to sweep the Nationals.
We need to keep an eye on the Brewers (55 losses), and there are three other teams that have 53 losses right behind them.

That valuable first overall pick in the June 2014 draft (Carlos Rodon) is ours for now but a lot of ballgames left to play.

The Astros and Marlins both lose their games heading into the all-star break.

1. Astros 33-61
2. Marlins 35-58

I'll worry about the Brewers in the second half of the season when they catch the Marlins, record wise.
The Astros will probably win most of the games Jarred Cosart (1-0, 0.00 ERA) starts. The kid is pretty impressive.
There is talk that the Astros will send Jarred Cosart back to Triple-A though. Which will help our chances to get the first pick.

6-game home stand for the Astros starting on Friday Night (July 19) against Seattle and then they play Oakland on Monday-Wednesday.
Four days off with the all-star break. We're in good shape to clinch the first overall pick in 2014. But a lot of ballgames left.

I can't imagine the Astros out-winning the Marlins unless we call up Mark Appel and they trade Giancarlo Stanton (both are possible).
We're probably not going to call up Mark Appel, George Springer or Jonathan Singleton until September 1 when the rosters expand.

Also Carlos Correa and Delino DeShields Jr. played in the MLB future's game today. But I don't expect either called up until next year.
Correa will likely be our starting shortstop on Opening Day 2015, but I can see him being called up during the 2014 season.

The Astros sent the young stud Jarred Cosart back to Triple-A because they want to tank for the first pick. LOL

All he did was dazzle in his MLB debut. Oh well, it is what it is.
