why not use (possibly) our best pitcher against the meat of their lineup, and they were going into extras being the home team, so a save situation wouldn't be possible anyhow

I hate how closers are usually a team's best pitcher, yet they play the least innings

At home, you always use your closer in the ninth if you're going to use him..
Can't give him a save, so might as well make sure your team gets to play into extras.
