less 4-seamers which sets up the splitter.
He even admitted he's throwing less fastballs and more sinkers.
He can't elevate above and even in the strike zone anymore.. Everything is down with the same action on it.. what do you think is going to happen? Hitters are well aware he can't throw a fastball by them so they can sit breaking pitches.
The fact that you think Tanaka is the same Tanaka prior to the injury is funny and that he didn't have to make adjustments.
That is quite the reach there.
First off, he's throwing just as many 4-seamers as he is sinkers this year. The whole thing about him throwing more sinkers lasted for about 4 starts before he scrapped the whole idea.
Secondly, the reason he decided to throw more sinkers this year was because his 4-seam was BY FAR his worst pitch last season. Hitters had a 175 wRC+ off his 4-seam last year vs 144 wRC+ against the sinker(not good, but an improvement). His bugaboo has always been the longball and the main culprit was always his 4-seam(.243 ISO against his 4-seam in 2014) so by throwing more sinkers(.167 ISO against in 2014), he would mitigate the amount of HR's he gave up. That was theory, anyways.

I never said his career is over but he's a completely different pitcher until he gets what ultimately will have to be done anyways and that's TJ'd.
I also never said he wouldn't be a semi-decent starter til he has to have the surgery.. but IF he had it now.. and missed the year.. he could return dominant..
what the Yankees are doing is they are playing with fire with his arm and just hoping that just his stuff gets outs instead of being able to move the ball up/down, etc.
So I'm guessing the Yankees should take the advise of some random dude on the internet and have him go under the knife instead of listening to medical professionals and some of the best doctors in the world that have advised against him getting the surgery. Makes sense, bro.
Also with more and more pitchers having to get second(Medlen, Beachy, Dan Hudson, Jarrod Parker, etc) and even third(Jonny Venters) TJS, the last thing you want is your pitcher having the procedure unless he absolutely has to.
Guys like Wainwright and Ervin Santana have pitched with tears in their elbows for years before having to finally get the surgery. It's easy to say "lol just have him get the tommy john bro" when it's not your $100mil and job on the line.
