You missed the point, it wasn't the Cubs who did it.. every FA this year has some sort of opt out after an X amount of years. Cespedes, Price, Upton, etc all got opt outs. There was only like two players who didn't get opt out clauses who signed.

it started with the cubs and then was a domino effect after.

the other FAs who got them have the cubs and the heyward/price deals to thank.

it has to start somewhere.

i edited because i know that. price is one of the best pitchers on the planet, and as good as heyward is, most people wouldnt put him on the list of best position players on the planet.

boston started a trend with a superstar and the cubs followed with a double opt out clause to a player who many say "hasnt reached his ceiling yet."

the cubs started it for more of the average-good player, and its a good thing.

i wish the cardinals had given heyward that contract instead.

It didn't start with Heyward is what I'm getting at.

If you're looking for where it started; begin with Stanton's contract or at Jordan Zimmerman's opt out contract this year.

It's just ridiculous how many players have gotten opt outs even for fringe players.

Well, as long as GMs keep offering these opt outs, players are gonna get em.

Low risk for a player, all the risk on the gms/owners. Stantons opt outs were what 5+ years down the road in the contract?

Heyward has a unique contract that is gonna change the way free agency is from here on out. That double opt out is something were gonna see more of.

Price will never opt out of his deal.
He's not going to be getting paid more than his current contract pays him once his opt out day comes.
