carlos gomez AND fiers to the Astros

wow

I'm watching it on the Astros pre-game show on Root Sports Houston.

This may turn out to be the best thing that happened when I look at all the options that were left after they failed to land Hamels or Price. They were also talking to the Padres about James Shields, not just Tyson Ross and Conroe native Andrew Cashner, but his remaining salary and struggles this season (21 homers allowed) make him a tough sell and likely a bad fit at Minute Maid Park.

The Padres would have to eat most of James Shields' remaining salary (he was signed to 4 years, $75 million). The Astros tried to sign him this past winter when he was still viewed as an all-star caliber pitcher. I think Mike Leake from the Reds could have been had by the Astros and he's hot right now. 4-1 record with a 1.25 ERA and 0 home runs allowed in his past 5 games. Including a shutout gem over the Cardinals, aka the best team in the game this year.

Oh well. Mike Fiers it is. At least now I can stop stressing about the trade deadline. It's time to focus on winning the AL West. A sweep over the Angels tonight would be nice. I'm excited about Carlos Gomez. Jed Lowrie is starting at third base tonight and George Springer is returning in three weeks. Carlos Gomez will be a nice fit regardless. Too bad he can't play tonight though. Just took the physical.

6:42pm: The Brewers will receive outfield prospects Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, right-hander Adrian Houser and lefty Josh Hader, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Heyman adds that the medicals in this deal have already been approved, so Gomez’s hip is clearly not a concern for the Astros

Brett Phillips is going to become one of the best outfielders in baseball in a few years. Really sucks to see him dealt. The Brewers got a real gem. Domingo Santana was hitting over .250 with a couple home runs this year before the Astros sent him back down. I wanted to see more of him when Springer got hurt but they made the right choice starting Preston Tucker. He offers more consistent power.

We drafted Kyle Tucker, his younger brother, 5th overall in this past draft.
I guess the Astros are confident enough he can eventually become as good as Brett Phillips.

Also, we stole Daz Cameron in the second round. The Astros may have a couple more elite prospect outfielders in another year or two.

For fantasy dudes, keep eye on Olivera once he's called up. He'll be batting behind Freeman and should be up in the majors in a couple weeks.

He'll be playing 3B for us, but it might have him listed as 2B/SS to start.
