Unbelievable literally 10 hours after Travis was placed on DL, Plawecki got a hairline fracture, and is expected to be on DL for 10 days with possible more days of rest depending on his conditions. This can only give Lobaton and Nido plenty of time to field themselves an opportunity. Although, this is a blessing in disguise, as I don't think KP isn't gonna pan out that well as starting C, I believe Nido will prove his defense and ability to throw out runners will be invaluable.

I place a premium on hitting, especially considering how many games our pitchers lost last year due to our inability to generate offense. But Nido is a defensive specialist, and if he can average at least .240-260 BA with 10-15 RBI's, I'm okay with that.

I do agree with you that this is unexpected, but I think we will be okay. Growing pains with newer people but the catcher position is a position we have a struggle with for a long time.

As New York Mets rumors swirl about possible catching additions following the injuries to Kevin Plawecki and Travis d’Arnaud, Tim Healey of the Newsday reports that the Mets have not had any recent conversations with the Miami Marlins about J.T. Realmuto this week.

However, Healey also notes that the Mets did touch base with Miami during the offseason, but there were no signs of traction.

The Mets have signed catcher Johnny Monell for minor league depth.

What would you give up for JT Realmuto? I would have to believe it would cost Nimmo+ one more A+ prospect like Dominic Smith, Gimenez or Dunn.

To be honest, JT has always been a fantastic hitter, and ranked 6th overall catcher at the age of 26, but I think I would pass ultimately.

I think Nimmo will become a star in 2-4 years.

Hes a lot better at both throwing and hitting.

Do you have stats to support this fact?

Lucroy is no longer the great pitcher framer he is... He's also been terrible defensively... The only thing he has going for him is his hitting, and for catchers it is pretty decent. But if you're talking about throwing out hitters he's been off to a good start this year, last year? Absolutely fucking dreadful.

I don't think the A's are letting him go though. I would like him as a cheaper option, but JT is far superior and have a better ceiling at this point in their careers.

There’s no one aspect of his game that can take all the blame — his wRC+ is currently a 74, compared to the 121 he ran from 2012 through 2016 — but after being one of the very best framers in the game several years ago, he’s been one of the very worst in all of baseball this year.

No one is really sure what’s going on defensively. Even the A’s just throw their hands up. Lucroy will be what Lucroy will be. But to make matters all the more complicated, Lucroy has also changed dramatically next to the plate, instead of just behind it. Between the last two seasons, 234 players have batted at least 250 times in each year. Here are the five biggest drops in strikeout rate.

Justin Smoak, -12.7%
Evan Gattis, -10.1%
Jonathan Lucroy, -7.8%
Eddie Rosario, -7.7%
Whit Merrifield, -7.7%

All right, maybe that looks pretty good — Lucroy last season made constant contact. He made it tremendously difficult for any pitcher to pick up a swing and miss. But here are the five biggest increases in ground-ball rate.

Jonathan Lucroy, +16.3%
Troy Tulowitzki, +12.0%
Evan Longoria, +11.5%
Ian Desmond, +9.3%
Trea Turner, +8.6%

Year over year, Lucroy has the biggest ground-ball-rate increase on record, going back to 2002. More contact, yeah, but more contact on the ground, and this is a catcher we’re talking about, not Juan Pierre. So, this follows from that — here are the five biggest drops in hard-hit rate.

Jonathan Lucroy, -13.1%
Gregory Polanco, -9.8%
Jose Bautista, -9.7%
J.J. Hardy, -9.5%
Mark Trumbo, -8.9%
