It aint like the dude has a 1-2 week slump. he's been an average hitter his whole career and all he's done is regress and he's still young.
he has potential to improve, but if he doesn't, holy fuck they messed up.
I think WAR is probably one of the most important stats in baseball, but you realize that WAR is calculated differently by different companies that calculate it? It's the most convoluted stat that is twisted to make a player appear better or worse than they actually are.
At the end of the day Heyward is an excellent defensive player, and a 100% mediocre hitter. Hence my Jose Inglesias reference. Great defense, mediocre hitting. Does that warrant $20 million a year? especially locked in for 8 years? lol fuck no.
He isn't locked in for 8 years though. 2 opt-out clauses..
+ how many elite defenders who get on base are available entering their prime?
It's not like he is 32 years old past his prime and was an average performer throughout his career. He is 26 and has time to improve..
Cubs get all of his prime years, and with the warm weather finally getting around to the Chicago area, he should start heating up.
