That's not where his main value is, but it's still part of the game of baseball.
As the Mets broadcast said today, Colon was embarrassed about how he did at the plate last season. What did he do? He worked on it and worked on it and he looks much improved from last season, albeit still not very good. And that did not take away from his pitching. If 42 year old, 280 pound Bartolo Colon can pick up a bat every 9th batter during his starts... Every pitcher should be able too. You are almost giving them a pass by not having them practice their hitting/bunting/etc.
It isn't just simple managerial duties, it's a lot more complex to manage in the NL all around. Not to mention that the NL have much faster games (which people point as the lack of DH being a huge reason), and having faster games is much much better for baseball.
Colons batting an amazing .146 this year after all that work hes put in.
They should get a pass. They grew up as fucking pitchers. They pitch. If its so much of the game then why would they work so much on their pitching than on their hitting.
Its basically enjoying watching the circus come to town for 10% of a professional baseball game.
More complex doesn't mean that 95% of the time managers aren't going to do the same thing that people watching at home would do in the same situation.

There's quite a difference between entertaining and successful lol
(granted he has had some decent at bats this year, in his standards)
Yea thats what I said at first. "They bat below 150." And the 2 of them responded with how Colon got a hit today.
