computer laggyness is unrelated to your resolution issue. you can download ad-aware and/or spybot s&d (both free) to clean up your computer a bit. (though make sure you aren't having both scan at he same time)

as for your monitor, my first suggestion would be to uninstall your current drivers, then install new ones. Graphics drivers are written in assembly language which is a pita. It's pretty easy for stuff to go haywire in them.

Thanks numone.
I posted this on the donor forum + the comp section.
I've managed to surprisingly bring the resolution back to normal but after I do it, it reverts back to 1280 x 1024...This is of course after I uninstall drivers and reinstall them (I tried this 3 times already and it always reverts back after I turn on my comp again.)
Some people suggest it could be a burnout of my gfx card and that I should get a new one? I think that might be right though...I cant seem to detect the gfx card when I go on my control panel...

ok depending on when you purchased this EVGA used to have a lifetime warranty on their product, that has recently been changed to a 2 year warranty. Either way I would call them up and, if under warranty, they will likely ship you a new one. This sounds like an issue with the card.

Dont think thats likely, I dont have anything left of the casing, receipt, or anything else.
This is my exact model computer btw: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01570951&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3813355#N33

The only thing that is changed is the power supply and the 9800gt.
One of my family members has an old 7800gt, do you know if I can get my old resolution running off that?

max res: 2560 x 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130256

so the graphics card wouldn't limit it. would be a good way to test the problem and eliminate stuff.

Thanks, ill give it a try later today and let you know.
I honestly don't really care about having a decent card anymore -- I only use the computer for social media, MS office, and watch movies...just want the old resolution back.

yeah I run a 9500 GT and a 7600 GT (I use 3 monitors :P)
but pmuch any card 7xxx and up are good to use for most things. Unless you're a hardcore gamer then that 7800 will be just fine, I run all modern games on my computer just fine with my 2 cards (though the game actually runs on the 9500 GT).

Okay, so I switched my 9800 to the 7600gt
Im 90% sure its this one right here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130073
So far so good, I got the old resolution back but the screen flickered on and off 3 times when I booted the comp...buts its good now as Im typing this.

I noticed something when I was switching the gfx cards though. The 9800gt had another cord you have to stick to it (A square with a lot of other squares inside)...Is that some sort of power supply for the gfx card drawing from the main power supply?
I couldnt find that in the 7600gt, I dont want to catch shit on fire, so I want to make sure I got it all right lmao.
I also noticed you cant fasten the 7600gt as well with the screws (The ones you gotta spin, one on each side so that it locks)...so it might be a bit loose.
Sorry for the lack of proper terminology lawl.

/e: Disregard that 'screw' thing, I found the two screws for fastening the monitor to the gfx card.
So far so good, its still okay after I turned off the comp and on again.

yeah some graphics cards run off the power supply unit, other smaller ones the motherboard provides enough power. Usually cards that have fans need the extra power from the power supply unit. what you have here sounds good.
