JT Realmuto’s contract has no buyouts and no options

JT is deferring half of his pay this year to 2027 and 2028

JT will be the highest paid catcher per year in MLB history at $23.1 million a year

All it took was getting rid of McPhail and Klentak. Bless Dombroski and Fuld for getting the obvious number 1 priority done.

Can someone explain why Pedroia gets his last paycheck?

I know these contracts are guaranteed, but even if they retire?

So if Trout retired today, hed still make all that money?

Yes he still gets paid, since his contract is guaranteed for the duration. The same thing happened when prince Fielder retired due to medical reasons. Rangers had to pay out the remainder of the contract, but were able to recuperate part of the money through insurance I believe.

The reason he can't play is because of baseball injuries and he never violated terms of his contract. He basically gets to claim that it was work related and he is able to retire and still get paid because of that. Now if he retired and wasn't injured he would not be paid the remaining salary or if he got injured doing something the team forbid him from doing and caused him a career ending injury.

So if Trout was healthy and retired now, he would not be paid.
