This attitude is misplaced imo. There's nothing wrong with wearing a player's jersey. All it really says is that you respect the team and/or that specific player.

I think some fans try to act like there's some machismo thing at stake, as if it's gay to rep your favorite player. Not all people who wear jerseys are gay, just mostly San Francisco fans.
