I don't view top 5 as "in the conversation"
I think of in the conversation as someone who has a legitimate shot to win the award. Mookie has no shot at winning MVP over Altuve, Trout, or Donaldson.
This.
Let's just take a look at 2015 for comparison.
AL MVP:
1. Josh Donsldson
2. Mike Trout
3. Lorenzo Cain
4. Manny Machado
5. Dallas Keuchel
Nobody got first place votes other than Trout and Donaldson. You're saying Dallas Keuchel was in the conversation for MVP?? Cmon.
NL MVP:
1. Bryce Harper
2. Paul Goldschmidt
3. Joey Votto
4. Anthony Rizzo
5. Andrew McCutchen
This was harpers award all the way, Goldschmidt atleast a compelling #2. But was McCutchen ever even considered an MVP candidate? Don't think so.
AL Cy Young:
1. Dallas Keuchel
2. David Price
3. Sonny Gray
4. Chris Sale
5. Chris Archer
Again, #3,4,5 got zero first place votes. Chris Archer didn't stand a chance at winning the Cy young last year.
NL Cy Young
1. Jake Arrieta
2. Zack Greinke
3. Clayton Kershaw
4. Gerrit Cole
5. Max Scherzer
Cole and Scherzer were afterthoughts. This was a 3 man race.
Go back to 2014, it's the exact same story in each award.
Michael Brantley, Jose Abreu and Robinson Cano were #3,4,5 in AL MVP voting. None were ever in consideration to win.
Jonathan Lucroy and Anthony Rendon were #4,5 in NL MVP voting. Again, not even considered a threat to win. Zero first place votes among them.
#5 in MVP voting just means you had a really good season.
