The Baltimore Orioles selected shortstop Manny Machado with the No. 3 pick in last June's draft and the Florida native is off to a tremendous start, hitting .333/.445/.611 for Class-A Delmarva.
A scout tells ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that "I saw A-Rod at 18, and I think he might be better than A-Rod was as an 18-year-old. I've seen this kid do everything you'd want to see a superstar do."
Machado could be on the fast track to the big leagues and could leave Delmarva in his rearview mirror sooner than later this season. But while it's clear Machado is a tremendous talent, perhaps the scout was a bit generous in his assessment.
Alex Rodriguez, at age 18, hit .312/.376/.577 split between three levels, including a 32-game stint in Triple-A that produced a .311/.359/.611 line. If Machado can do that before he turns 19, it'll mean at least two quick promotions in the next few months, as the lad turns 19 this summer.
