so howard made $115m over the last 5 years of his contract. and produced a -4.2 war total.
pujols has made $100 over the last 5 years of his contract. and produced a 14.3 war total.
okay so 5 years left, and hes producing on par with edwin encarnacion and jose bautista, and chris davis.
2 of which will be making crazy money after this season, and davis is making 23m a season for the next 6 years.
and pujols isnt making 30m a year. hes making the same amount as howard is this season, 26m next season, then 27m, 28m, 29m, and 30m.
guaranteed this contract will not look as bad in a few seasons, if not by next season. when it wont be as rare in signing 33+ year olds to 5 year contracts of and AAV of 30m.
pujols was only 31 when he signed this deal, coming off already a HOF career with the cards. guys like encarnacion and bautista are going to be making 25+m a year for the next 3-5 years starting next season, and they have no HOF stature behind them. its just going to be the norm.
had the last 5 seasons been $100m worth? prolly not. but is it the worst contract ever? who knows, theres 5 years left, and his continuing AAV will be the norm very soon. but the phillies just paid someone $115m to produce a -4.2 war for them for the last 5 seasons... lol!!!
And Howard will be gone after this season, off the books, poof, cya, bye bye, etc. We will always love him for what he did bringing a World Series to Philadelphia in his prime with that great core.
Meanwhile, you'll be paying an aging Pujols $25 to $30 Million a year for the NEXT FIVE YEARS until 2021 into his 40's on a non-contending team lmfao.
Also, you want to talk about what the Phillies got out of Howard after he signed that big 5 year contract extension? How about we talk about what they got out of him before that when he was the NL MVP (over Albert Pujols btw) making $900K a year. Dude was a bargain and a half in those stages of his career.
At the end of the day our future is bright, we have the remaining large contract coming off the books, and the Phillies (one of MLB's largest market teams) will essentially have unlimited money as they will have ZERO obligations in coming years with a very good farm system to boot. The Angels can not say that, and are essentially wasting a talent like Mike Trout...

Eh Pujols is still putting up pretty damn good numbers for a 36 year old tho. His average has took a steep drop but I'll take it still. His foot was giving him major problems last year etc, but he seems to be coming along now. Edwin may take a drop over the next few years, only time will tell
& don't forget Edwin has the pleasure of hitting in one of the best lineups in baseball whereas Pujols has Trout and thats pretty well it lol
Agreed, but that's not the point being made. If you're paying a guy $30M a year into his 40's (which carries a HUGE risk) it better be on a contending team. Not one of baseballs bottom feeders with a shit farm system and no end in sight LOL. That's just...a waste....
