Astros GM says top prospect Jon Singleton is “on deck” for a call-up

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/15/astros-gm-says-top-prospect-jon-singleton-is-on-deck-for-a-call-up/

Jon Singleton is thriving at Triple-A and the Astros are getting horrendous production at first base, so it sounds like Houston may soon be ready to call up the 22-year-old top prospect. Singleton, who was acquired from the Phillies in the Hunter Pence trade and ranked as a consensus top-100 prospect in each of the past four seasons, is hitting .293 with 12 homers and a 1.030 OPS in 38 games at Triple-A and he’s made good strides with his strikeout-to-walk ratio as well.

So when might he arrive in Houston? Here’s what general manager Jeff Luhnow told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com: "Singleton’s progressing. We see him as a guy who’s close to being able to contribute at the major league level. We’re excited. We’ve all seen the reaction the fans had at bringing up prospects like [George] Springer and last year with [Jarred] Cosart and we have more coming. I would say Singleton is on deck."

But the Astros can't just stop with a Jon Singleton call up (hopefully soon). 21-year-old Domingo Santana should be called up to play left field as well. He's mashing the ball at Oklahoma City hitting in front of Singleton. These guys project to hit 3rd and 4th in our lineup. They need to face big league pitching and that's the only way they're going to progress.

George Springer struggled mightily in the Majors his first month with the Astros back in April (.182 with 0 home runs in 56 at-bats), but now he's improved and is hitting .286 with 3 home runs in May over his last 49 at-bats. Even when Springer struggled to hit he was still playing great defense in right field. I'd imagine both Jon Singleton and Domingo Santana will suffer the same fate once they're called up, but eventually they'll ease their way in and become productive hitters. Talent is talent. Baseball is baseball. That never changes. The good players make adjustments to succeed.

Depending on how soon the Astros make some more call ups, I think they can avoid 100 losses this year. Either way, Three more weeks until they have the first pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. No doubt they're going to be drafting starting pitching. I still prefer Carlos Rodon just because he's got collegiate experience and is a lefty.

Dallas Keuchel has been really really good this season.  Dat 65% ground ball rate is Tim Hudson-esqe.  Going to be nice trade piece for the Astros when they try to extend their 100-loss streak a few more seasons down the line.

General manager Jeff Luhnow is feeling the pressure to call up several prospects. Fans are tired of losing. We'll also see 19-year-old Carlos Correa bumped up to Douible-A in the next week or two. I actually emailed Jeff Luhnow a few days ago and expressed my frustrations and he replied back and mentioned that I need to be patient a little while longer. By the end of this season and going into spring training, which I assume he meant the 2015 season, that I'll start to see their big plan taking its course.

I have no reason not to believe him given the amazing job he did with the St. Louis Cardinals for roughly a decade. He put the Cardinals in position to contend, year after year, regardless of any big-name free agents they lost. Their minor league system was producing quality players anytime they needed.

I'm excited about George Springer after a shaky start. He's finally looking comfortable at the plate. He hit a big two-run homer last night.

Domingo Santana went yard again last night. It's bittersweet to watch our young 3 and 4 hitters - Santana and Singleton - at Triple-A performing so well and tearing the cover off the ball but the Major League team is struggling to score runs on a consistent basis.

5/14/14: George Springer belts a two-run home run to left off Jason Frasor to tie the game for the Astros

The Astros are 14-28 right now. Second worst record in baseball. The Cubs are 13-27 and just a little worse.
I want to see the Astros continue to improve and win games but the first pick in the 2015 draft is reachable.

But the Cubs suck so bad, after I watched them play on WGN yesterday, it's going to be tough to lose more games.
I guess if we end up with the second or third pick in the 2015 draft it's alright. We have the first pick in two weeks.

Who would have thought the Diamondbacks and Cubs would be as bad as they are this year? LOL

If the Astros call up Singleton and Santana, sometime this year, they'll win more games than both the Cubs and Diamondbacks (16-28).

The Astros are 3-1 in their last 4 games. Jose Altuve is hitting .350 in the month of May with seven multi-hit games this month. Kyle Farnsworth came out of the bullpen today just hours after the Astros signed him. He's 38 years old and doesn't have much of a future left in the Major Leagues - near retirement at this point - but anything to try and help that porous bullpen. He didn't look that good giving up two earned runs and two hits in his 0.2 innings of work.

4-1 record in the last 5 games. The Astros better stop winning so much or else they won't have the first overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. They probably just caught a slumping Rangers and White Sox team at home is all. Tough 10-game road trip starting tonight: 3 at Angels, 4 at Mariners and 3 at Royals. I'll be shocked if they go any better than 3-7 on this road trip.

Pretty good pitching matchup tonight: Dallas Keuchel (4-2, 3.06 ERA) versus Garrett Richards (4-0, 2.42 ERA)
Should be a real test tonight playing the Angels on the road. Two of the hotter pitchers in the AL on the mound.

3-0 Astros in the middle of the 1st. They already got enough run support for Dallas Keuchel I hope. LOL

Altuve is having one heck of a May. Hitting .360 and George Springer is hitting .290 this month. Castro is on fire also.
