Astros GM says top prospect Jon Singleton is “on deck” for a call-uphttp://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/15/astros-gm-says-top-prospect-jon-singleton-is-on-deck-for-a-call-up/Jon Singleton is thriving at Triple-A and the Astros are getting horrendous production at first base, so it sounds like Houston may soon be ready to call up the 22-year-old top prospect. Singleton, who was acquired from the Phillies in the Hunter Pence trade and ranked as a consensus top-100 prospect in each of the past four seasons, is hitting .293 with 12 homers and a 1.030 OPS in 38 games at Triple-A and he’s made good strides with his strikeout-to-walk ratio as well.
So when might he arrive in Houston? Here’s what general manager Jeff Luhnow told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com: "Singleton’s progressing. We see him as a guy who’s close to being able to contribute at the major league level. We’re excited. We’ve all seen the reaction the fans had at bringing up prospects like [George] Springer and last year with [Jarred] Cosart and we have more coming. I would say Singleton is on deck."
But the Astros can't just stop with a Jon Singleton call up (hopefully soon). 21-year-old Domingo Santana should be called up to play left field as well. He's mashing the ball at Oklahoma City hitting in front of Singleton. These guys project to hit 3rd and 4th in our lineup. They need to face big league pitching and that's the only way they're going to progress.
George Springer struggled mightily in the Majors his first month with the Astros back in April (.182 with 0 home runs in 56 at-bats), but now he's improved and is hitting .286 with 3 home runs in May over his last 49 at-bats. Even when Springer struggled to hit he was still playing great defense in right field. I'd imagine both Jon Singleton and Domingo Santana will suffer the same fate once they're called up, but eventually they'll ease their way in and become productive hitters. Talent is talent. Baseball is baseball. That never changes. The good players make adjustments to succeed.
Depending on how soon the Astros make some more call ups, I think they can avoid 100 losses this year. Either way, Three more weeks until they have the first pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. No doubt they're going to be drafting starting pitching. I still prefer Carlos Rodon just because he's got collegiate experience and is a lefty.
the way the rangers are going and how ur prospects are developing u might finish 4th..
