Looking more and more like it's going to be Ichiro for RF, Youkilis for 3B, and in-house(Cervelli/Romine/Stewart) for C. So pretty much the same team as last year but with huge downgrades at RF, C and potentially 3B. Really sucks that this new budget is going to keep us from competing in the last few years of Jeter/Mo.

Team can still compete.
Upgrade by having these fuckers stay healthy and hit the fucking baseball in october.
Also not understanding how you're already going to write off RF/3B as a huge downgrade.

Swisher to Ichiro isn't a huge downgrade?

And Alex was a beast last season until he was bit by the injury bug. He's still a .270/.360/.440ish player with plus defense at 3B when he's healthy. I don't realistically expect that from Youk next season and there's a good chance he could fall off a cliff and become useless if you dig deeper into his decline.

Ichiro bounced back decently from 2011. He was a 2.6 WAR guy last year, and seemed comfortable in pinstripes. Its a downgrade from Swisher but I wouldn't consider it terrible.
Also, if you consider the outfield as a whole with Gardner coming back, then match Ichiro vs. our left field production last year and gardner vs. Swisher, it doesn't seem all that bad either.
And at 3rd, theres a chance we get a healthy A-Rod 2/3 of the way through the season. If Youk proceeds further into an abyss, then sure huge downgrade. But if he comes to this Yankees lineup with, if nothing else, better discipline at the plate, I think he can be a fine stopgap for whatever portion of the season. And we've managed to get decent enough production from declining veterans in recent years.

If you expect Ichiro to repeat his performance with the Yankees last season, then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Ichiro had been a sub-.700 OPS guy for almost 2 full seasons. It's at the very least a 2 win downgrade in RF and possibly 3 wins at C. That makes us a fringe 90-win team and that probably gets you 3rd place in the AL East right now.

And Gardner's return? Should be worth at least 2 wins.
We'll be in range to stay competitive and gotta hope to get hot at the right time.
