So our starting outfield on opening day 2014 will be Robbie Grossman in left field, Dexter Fowler in center field and George Springer in right field? I must admit the trade for Dexter Fowler caught me by surprise this evening. But only giving up Brandon Barnes and Jordan Lyles for him isn't bad. Neither player really had a long-term future with the team.

I don't really know much about Dexter Fowler other than he's fast and has some decent pop in his bat.
He's better than L.J. Hoes which means he'll be an immediate upgrade for us in the outfield.

How's his glove? I'm guessing stellar with his speed.

Minute Maid Park is one of the biggest in all of baseball to straight away center (436 feet) with Tal's Hill and a pole in play.

I'm really excited about his defense watching some highlights.

Didn't think we were going to make any moves this offseason, but this was definitely a good trade for us.

He's like a vacuum out there in center field. We're going to be good defensively in 2014 with the exception of maybe first base.

Dexter Fowler, Scott Feldman and Chad Qualls.

Some of these additions the Astros are making make me wonder if they can avoid 100-plus losses for a 4th straight year?

We may not finish with the first overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. I have not studied up on the top prospects that far ahead anyways.

But my only concern with Feldman is his ERA in the American League. Obviously he had much better numbers in the National League.

Maybe Scott Feldman can DH when he's not pitching. Just kidding. But pretty nice swing there.

Almost two months without a post. I don't want to lose this thread because of a three-month inactivity. It's been a boring off-season but at least the Astros have tried to make some improvements. I think Jesus Guzman will be a good pinch-hitter for us this season. He can also start in the outfield or first base.

Jesse Crain could also be a nice boost for our bullpen if he stays healthy. He made the all-star team last year.
We could have a much improved bullpen in 2014 if Jesse Crain and Chad Qualls both pitch like they have been.

The Astros have invited top prospects Mark Appel, Carlos Correa and George Springer to spring training.

Astros' farm system ranked No. 1 by ESPN

HOUSTON -- With seven of the top 100 Minor League prospects in MLB.com's rankings, the Astros have compiled the best farm system in baseball, according to rankings released Tuesday by ESPN.com's Keith Law.

The Astros have stockpiled talent by trading away veterans for multiple prospects and securing the top pick in the Draft for the last two years (they'll pick first again this June). Law also credits the team's aggressiveness in Latin America and willingness to sign its picks above recommendation with reshaping the farm system.

"They have depth and they have a couple of high-ceiling guys at the top of the system, getting close to the point where the light at the end of the tunnel no longer looks like an oncoming train," Law wrote. "It's been ugly, Astros fans, but hang in there."

The Astros have lost 324 games the last three seasons, including a club-record 111 games last year in their first year in the American League. They're expected to be improved this year after signing veteran pitcher Scott Feldman, trading for center fielder Dexter Fowler and signing relievers Matt Albers, Chad Qualls and Jesse Crain.

Houston began to see the benefits of its rejuvenated farm system last season with the arrival of pitching prospects Jarred Cosart, Brett Oberholtzer and Josh Zeid, among others, while outfielder Robbie Grossman and third baseman Matt Dominguez emerged as potential long-term starters.

Nineteen-year-old shortstop Carlos Correa, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 Draft, is ranked as the team's top prospect by MLB.com at No. 8 overall. He's followed by 2013 top pick right-handed pitcher Mark Appel (17), outfielder George Springer (21), first baseman Jonathan Singleton (50), right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (52), right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (54) and Delino DeShields Jr. (66), who made the switch to the outfield this year from second base.

Springer and Singleton are expected to make their debuts this season, and Appel could also reach Houston as well.

I'm not too surprised. When you pick first overall in the MLB draft three straight years and are picking high every round it should lead to a stacked farm system. Also a lot of the trades they made have panned out. Mostly the prospects they hauled in for Hunter Pence. I'm ready to see a lot of those guys at the Major League level. I think our best draft is yet to come in June. We will likely draft Carlos Rodon number one overall. I feel as excited about that as I've been over any potential free agency signing we could have made.

Um I'll just leave this Rodon slider right here.
