It's not an overall improvement on what is already on the field; Murphy is a great hitter but is limited to 2nd defensively and he's terrible there. With that said; it gives the Cubs a proven vet that can still rake with the best of them. Biggest thing to me is it gives them a guy that can hit situationally in the playoffs; which is HUGE. Unfortunately, the defense gets worse.
Just my guess at the lineup when the playoffs come around (assuming and hopefully they make it):
Rizzo - 1b
Murphy - 2B
Bryant - 3B
Zobrist - RF
Schwarber -LF
Baez - SS
Contreras - C
P
Almora/Heyward - CF
Russell/Happ/the other half of the CF platoon all sit on bench.
