Never liked that stat.
And it actually is even more meaningless early on the season cause of sample size.
Ive always looked at it as 'how badly did you destroy a team after you pretty much locked a win' Or 'how badly did you get destroyed when the team beat you'
The major contributor of that stat of course is extra runs after a game has been decided (ie beating a team 14-0 or losing in that same margin).

In 2013:

Team 1 had a +83 +/-

Team 2 had a +172 +/-

Both of these teams are in the same division.
Guess the number of wins they were separated by.
