How exactly was signing that old of a player to that long of a contract a smart move?

His first year with us he was 32...He would be 36 when the contract expired. That isn't a terrible contract, nobody at all thought he would shit the bed so suddenly.

I am not sure if you are being serious right now...
Chone Figgins is a good example of how smart moves don't always work out.

I think beltre is a better example, the guy was worth 9.9 wins his last season in LA, is ok in Seattle (most of his WAR is defense related), then as soon as he leaves he is 6+ WAR ability again. And his home/away splits weren't that drastic (most years wRC+ was within a few).

I was picking someone I know everyone hates on Jack for. I don't think people are upset about Beltre being in Seattle.
Also, Beltre was brought in before Jackie Z. Yes that is a good example of how a smart move doesn't pan out like it should though.

Upton to Mariners?! They agree'd to a package! Now it's just up to see if Justin will play for us if we throw some money at him!
Furbush and another reliever, Nick Franklin (prospect ss) and one of the big 3 for him. God I want this to happen.

You'd be so lucky, he is declining as of now

Yes, but we don't know why he has. It could just be a leverage play to draw some bonus money, or it could be that he is looking for other teams to trade for him. It's hard to say. I am reading up on the information now.
Interesting idea they posted on Uss Mariner. Turn Uptons 2015 season into a player option. Thus making him a FA sooner if he chooses.

i think you lucked out, Safeco would not help his numbers and that package was steep.

I refuse to believe this. xD
Honestly, Safeco might hurt him slightly but with the new fences it shouldn't be bad.
The relievers are good, but they are relievers. Franklin is a good prospect, but he is a non ss prospect. In the end I feel it would be a fair trade on paper. How that turns out is something to see.

Have you seen Uptons home road splits?? they are ridiculous.. my point is I don't think the Mariners will be competitive in the next 3 years, which would be the window with Upton.
