I am glad you read the post and I appreciate your response. I had wanted to bump it up actually so that I could get some insightful responses.
Well, we say that knowing what has become of him. That doesnt make it a bad signing though.
Dickey hasnt turned out, yes, I know that.
But I defend AA, I personally believed that he could at the least be a solid #2 and put a mid 3 ERA -- which would be phenomenal in AL East.
However, I thought acquiring someone who was suspended for PED and suspended for the 50 games kind of stupid. You know that for sure you are not getting the same Melky of 2012, and maybe not even 2011.
We have Rajai Davis (Yes, I know he cannot hit, but he does two things Melky will probably never end up doing; being a fielder + baserunner).
I am not sure if I would have signed Melky either, but for 8mm a season (he is 16 over two years ya?) I'd rather take a chance on him, than on a guy like Dickey where we gave up two blue chip prospects and took on a three year deal worth 30mm (starting next season). If we agree both were bad decisions, one is clearly less harmful.
Now to put Dickey in context, it was after the Marlins blockbuster, and is a bit more understandable since it seemed logical to go for the 'finishing touch.' So I have to think the Marlins deal is the real disaster, not that we gave up too much besides Marisnik (sp?) but because of the signal it sent in terms of changing philosophy, bringing in older guys with big contracts.
I'm with you on not throwing AA to the wolves, he has definitely had way more than his share of bad luck with these trades, but I wish he wasn't always scavenging when it came to trades and signings. Picking Dickey from the carcass of the Mets, picking up a soiled guy like Melky, hanging onto Escobar to get something for him in trade, refusing to fire that scumbag who is now in Boston until he could get some garbage utility player for him etc. To me there is something really upsetting about how he conducts the team's business.
