It’s decent. I wouldn’t argue that Harper or the organization is taking it up the ass with that contract one way or another. For a player like Harper it’s your run of the mill overpay-what-you-can-afford-for-your-star type of contract. I wasn’t mad when the contract was offered and i wouldn’t be mad now (even though I’m not a Phillies fan). It’s a very understandable contract that left both sides content.
I’m not sure if I agree with your projection of a few years down the road though, for a few reasons -
1- Potential injury
2- He’s heading into his 11th season and closing in on age 30, generally players (regardless of how talented) would be peaking around this time and start to digress
3- Uncertainty within the organization (where will they stand in 2-3 years for example?)
Well those risks always sit with any big long term contract of course. And it's not like Harper was old when he signed, he was just 26 years old. His contract runs through 38 years old, with the contract being a bit front loaded too.
The Phillies sleep well at night with this signing, that's for sure. He's one of the most marketable players in the league, his jersey sales are always among the top selling, and they're getting MVP level production out of him. Within the next few years we'll see more and more absurd contracts handed out with AAV reaching crazy levels. His $25M AAV is already not even in the top 10 in baseball, and he'll only drop farther and farther on that list as bigger and bigger contracts are handed out in the coming years.
We just need the front office to do a better job of surrounding him with talent so he can actually have a chance to win a ring
