why is that?

durability. It'd rather pay for a defensive wiz who can frame and throw out runners and get offense elsewhere

This, can always find catchers on market and drafts. Very few guys are Mike Piazza or Jorge Persada

The phillies can barely find a player that's viable on just one side of the ball.

He does both and happens to be the best catcher in baseball. We gave up a top tier prospect and an average major league catcher, would be dumb not to resign him.

He's been the best catcher in baseball for at least the past 3 years. Not sure what these comparisons are about.

Ideally we wouldn't give him anything over 5 years but we'll probably have to overpay because everybody else on this team sucks monster dick.

I fundamentally disagree with giving a catcher a huge long term deal when you know u will have to eventually swap him to first base and he will lose most of his value. He is awesome, but I’d rather invest long term munies elsewhere

That's true, his value will keep tanking regardless but the DH spot now in the NL saves their longevity a bit.

We need to keep any quality players we have. Not my money rofl.
