Every stadium has a visitor's locker room where the road team sets up camp for each series. But the traveling teams currently pay for nice hotels in every city as well. Wouldn't it be cheaper for MLB to own a large building near each ballpark that would serve as housing for visiting teams? Essentially it would be a barracks.

I imagine these teams spend insane amounts on hotels every year. I understand the teams make a lot of money, but bottom line it's still a business. Owners would still value being able to cut costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Small market teams like the A's would appreciate the cost cutting the most.

Hotels aren't necessarily the best setup. Players have to worry about interacting with the public, you have to organize checking in and out, traveling to the park etc. By owning a building in each city, teams could have complete control over how they want to set things up. Staff that worked at one barracks would get used to what different teams like and it would really streamline the process.

I don't foresee any team trying this.

My proposal isn't something that a team would do. It would be MLB owning a barracks in each city and every visiting team using them, thus cutting out hotel use league-wide all at the same time.

I also don't think it would happen, but that's not really relevant to what I'm asking. I'm asking if people think it would be cheaper this way than staying in nice hotels everywhere.

no because the startup costs would be astronomical

Why would MLB pay for this when owners currently do....
Makes absolutely no sense

i'd assume that the hotel rooms were free somewhat due to sponsorship deals and whatnot for the leagues. technically that isn't considered free though

I'm pretty sure this. If not Free, heavily discounted.

The hotels aren't that expensive, as it was mentioned they receive a major discount as they arrange these in bulk and buy out full blocks.

Plus, teams/players get the option of going to whichever hotel they want. So if something negative happens, there's always an option and it's not like they invested into the original option.

If you build something specifically for this, if it doesn't live up to the standards you'll have teams boycotting that place and not staying there, or complaining about shit, or whatever. Next thing you know certain teams will refuse to stay there because of an issue they had, and it'll be a total waste of a building.
