outstanding throw from left field
why was the catcher allowed to block the plate?
he was directly in the base path, which the new rules state is not allowed under any circumstance for the catcher
(so inb4 anyone says the catcher is "entitled" to catch the ball where it is, thats wrong)

incorrect. A catcher is allowed to block the base path if he is in the process of catching the ball. Meaning if the flight of the ball will cause him to enter the base path, he is allowed to attempt to catch it.

idk i just feel like this play has happened before and its always been catcher interference

Because most times the throw is off line and not in the base runners direction. I actually thought they would call him safe but reading the rule I can see why he was ruled out. The throw took him directly into the base runners path.

catcher is blocking the plate because he has to field the throw, and i guess he did have a few split seconds to get out of the way but it mightve risked him making the out at home.

umpire rules the runner safe despite him being clearly out (which you'll see clearly if you watch the whole video). seems like after they implemented the rule to prevent collisions they have been modifying it, which lead to the rule that Fgs posted earlier in the thread.

good thing theyre modifying it because what else is the catcher supposed to do if he's fielding the ball? just let the run score ? i think the rules are correct in that the catcher can block the plate if hes fielding the ball. anything less and he'd be jeopardizing the out, and intent to block the plate isnt even relevant if he doesnt first catch the ball

its not like either player wants a collision

but from this video (2 years ago), i gathered that they are at least modifying the rule as they go. i dont think that "while catcher is fielding a throw" stipulation was a part of the rule back then or the ump wouldve been under extreme scrutiny for this call

that's the first thing I told my buddy, I thought you couldn't block the plate anymore

if you think about it though, what can the catcher do if fielding the throw forces him to block the plate

cant expect the catcher to attempt an awkward catch etc just to avoid a collision
