looking to purchase one. any recommendations in the 500-700 price range?

I really like the shaft and frame on my Armstrong750.
It's a pretty sturdy bike and gets tons of compliments (If you're into that kind of thing)
I wouldn't recommend if you weigh over 250 lbs though as the tires might pop - put that into consideration you might need to get the armstrong1000 which can hold up to 325lbs of weight.

I don't know what your budget is, but I bought a nice 21 speed Diamond back mountain bike for around $500 (one of their lower end bikes). I'm around 200-210 lbs and ride it pretty rough when I go out. Never had any issues with in the 5 years I have had it, although I only ride like once or twice a month in the summer usually. But for the money its well built and has handled me jumping it and rough woodland trails.
